The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team had a solid start to the 2012 fall season with their first day of competition at the BYU Invitational, on Thursday, in Provo.
"We had some highs and lows today which can be expected being the first tournament. I'm really pleased with the progress of our underclassmen. We really expect to see Christa and Alma in the finals on Saturday in their draw. We need to recover tonight because tomorrow is a big day for us in both singles and doubles."
In doubles action, three of the four teams in action were victorious. The team of Simona Synkova and Veronica Popovici defeated Hilary Hays and Ashley Stuhlmann of Utah State, 8-2. They will play Mackenna Maddox and Andie Young of BYU in their quarterfinal match. Alexandra Kovacs and Sasa Nemcova won their opening match, 8-2, against Anissa Bryant-Swift and Manuela Pietzuch of Boise State. They will take on Nittaya Phonharath and Michelle Warwick of Weber State tomorrow. The other team to come away with a win was Jessica Parizher and Silviya Zhelyazkova against Kallie Sperry and Kristina Voytsekhovich, 8-5. Their next match will be against Meghan Sheehan-Dizon and Desiree Tran of BYU. Alma Espinosa and Christa Gecheva were defeated by McKenzie Davis and Jaci West of Utah State, 8-5. They will take on Anderson and Paul of BYU tomorrow morning in the doubles consolation round.
In the Blue Draw of the singles bracket, the Cowgirls played even on the day. The top seed Veronica Popovici needed three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, to earn the victory over Julie Tukuafu of Utah State. She will play Aubrey Paul of BYU. Simona Synkova beat Mackenna Maddox in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, as did Alexandra Kovacs against Kristi Elmer, 6-3, 6-2. Jessica Parizher won her first match of the day over Anissa Bryant-Swift of Boise State, 6-4, 6-3, but lost to McKenzie Davis of Utah State, 6-2, 6-0.
Two Cowgirls went undefeated in the White Draw of singles play, Christa Gecheva won 6-1, 6-4 over Ashley Stuhlmann of Utah State in her opener. Sophomore Alma Espinosa got off to a great start with a straight set win 6-4, 6-2 over Hilary Hays of Utah State followed by a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Lisa Waldron of BYU.
The Cowgirls will continue play beginning at 9:00 a.m. in doubles and 12:00 p.m. in singles action.
