The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team continued with both doubles and singles action at the BYU Invitational, on Friday, in Provo.
"I thought we had a good day as a team," said head coach Dean Clower. "We played some good doubles and continue to do the right things to get to that next level. In singles, we competed well and the great thing about today is that we were able to overcome our mistakes. I'm even more proud of the leaders on this team. Veronica, Christa and Jessica showed the younger players what it means to compete."
In doubles action, the only team to come away with a win was Dorottya Jonas and Veronica Popovici in the consolation round. They defeated Demi Daniels and Sydney Monson, 8-1, before finishing out the day with an 8-6 victory over Morgan Anderson and Mackenna Maddox. The pair will face Toby Miclat and Savannah Ware of BYU in the finals tomorrow. Alma Espinosa and Silviya Zhelyazkova fell to Nicolette and Desiree Tran, 8-4, as did Christa Gecheva and Jessica Parizher against Mayci Jones and Meghan Sheehan-Dizon, 8-6, in the semifinals of the main doubles draw.
Veronica Popovici, the only player left in the main draw of singles, defeated her opening day opponent, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3, but lost to Meghan Sheehan-Dizon, 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals. The other six Cowgirls were in action in two rounds of consolation play on Friday. Espinosa defeated Monson in straight sets, 6-0, 7-5. She would fall in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (14-12), against Evgenia Marushko of Southern Utah. Alena Vasileva beat her first opponent of the day Madeline Skaras, 6-1, 6-2, before falling to Miclat, 6-4, 6-3. Parizher lost her opening round to Miclat, 6-2, 6-3.
Freshman Dorottya Jonas and junior Silviya Zhelyazkova both went 2-0 on the day in consolation play Jonas defeated Aleksandra Ivanova, 6-1, 6-1, and her teammate Christa Gecheva, 6-2, 7-5. Gecheva beat Anastasiia Vasileva, 6-3, 6-2, in her first match of the day. Zhelyazkova won in two sets, 6-2, 6-3, over Afton Staheli and then defeated Veronika Rogova (SUU), 6-3, 6-1. She and Jonas will square off tomorrow in semifinals play.
The Cowgirls will conclude their first weekend of play tomorrow at the BYU Invitational in Provo.
