The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team opened up the 2011 fall season with their first day of competition at the Colorado Invitational, on Friday, in Boulder.
In doubles play, three teams were in action on the first day. The team of Simona Synkova and Christa Gecheva earned a spot in the semi-finals tomorrow with an 8-6 win over Madeleine Saari-Bystrom and Emma Isberg. They will face Kate Lukomskaya and Claudine Paulson tomorrow. Alexandra Kovacs and Sasa Nemcova won their opening round, 8-4, over Steffi Rath and Gabriella Boboc, but fell in the next round to Kate Lukomskaya and Claudine Paulson, 8-3. The final team to play today was Veronica Popovici and Jessica Parizher. They lost in their opening round to Stephanie Roy and Emily Carbone, 8-5.
In the Buff Black singles bracket, a freshman and junior made their way into the semi-finals. Sasa Nemcova lost the first set (0-6) but came back to win the next two, 6-4, 6-2, to defeat Steffi Rath. Christa Gecheva also needed three sets as she defeated Catherine Parenteau of Arkansas, 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-3. She and Nemcova will face each other tomorrow.
Three Cowgirls earned victories in the Buff Gold singles bracket led by All-Conference selection Veronica Popovici. She won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, against Ania Anuszkiewicz (Colorado). She will take on Madeleine Saari-Bystrom of Denver tomorrow. Junior Simona Synkova came away with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Carla Manzi (Colorado), while Jessica Parizher defeated her opponent Emily Carbone of Arkansas, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
The Cowgirls will continue play tomorrow with both singles and doubles action.
