LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming womens tennis team traveled to Provo, Utah, this last weekend, Sept. 17-19, to participate in the BYU Invitational. The action was the first of their fall season, and the Cowgirls were led in Provo by freshman Natalie Morozova, Laramie, Wyo., who finished third in the Division III singles bracket with a 2-1 record.
As a team, UW did not get off to a particularly good start to the season as they were 5-16 in singles action and 1-7 in doubles action over the three-day tournament. The tournament was highly competitive, as the field included the host 1998 WAC champion BYU Cougars, Washington State, Colorado State, Boise State, Weber State, Utah, UTEP and Wyoming.
Morozova, a 16-year old UW freshman, had an excellent tournament in her first collegiate tennis action. In the first round, Morozova defeated Kim Kelly of BYU soundly, 6-0, 6-1. In the second round Natalie lost a tough match to Tamara Filipovic of Washington St., 6-3, 6-4. Finally, against Trina Kotogooa of Utah, Morozova again won in two sets 6-2, 6-4, to claim third place in her bracket.
UW also got singles victories from Shirley Mendoza and Lisa Pruett in the first round, and a second round singles victory from Sarah Kay. The doubles team of Sarah Kay and Lisa Pruett won Wyomings lone doubles match on the final day.
