All six individuals went undefeated in singles action as the Wyoming tennis team opened up the Air Force Fall Invitational, on Friday, at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.
In the Alpha singles flight, redshirt freshman Magdalena Stencel defeated Erin Gebes of Marquette, 6-2, 7-6 (2). She will face Tamara Slijepcevic of Arkansas State in the semifinals. In the Bravo bracket, sophomore Dorottya Jonas won easily, 6-0, 6-2, over Adriana Wojakowska of Colorado State. Her next opponent will be Andrea Badileanu of Miami (OH). Nastya Tokareva beat her first round opponent, 6-7, 2-1 (ret.) and will face Lily Forlini of Air Force in the next round.
Senior Christa Gecheva opened up her day with a straight set win, 6-1, 6-3, over Jess Heeps-Ericksen of Arkansas State. Her next opponent will by Hanna Shteyn of Miami (OH). Silviya Zhelyazkova and Cecilia Mercier were the final two Cowgirls in action on the day. Zhelyazkova defeated Lexi Turley of Utah State, 7-5, 6-3, and will take on Aina Hernandez Soler tomorrow in the semifinals. Mercier needed three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, over Mollie Cooper of Colorado State. She will face Jessica Cedillo in the semifinals tomorrow.
In doubles play, Wyoming went 1-2 overall on the day. Zhelayzkova and Takerova were the only team to win as they defeated Marissa Baca and Chrissie Hoolahan of Northern Colorado, 8-6. They will play Badileanu and Costea from Miami (OH) in the semifinals. Gecheva and Stencel lost to Beth Coton and Courtney Schulte, 8-7. The final team in action was Jonas and Mercier who fell to Cooper and Aina Hernandez Soler, 8-6. Both of the teams will play in the back draw tomorrow.
The Cowgirls will return to action tomorrow beginning with doubles at 9:00 a.m. and singles action at 12:00 p.m.
