Cowgirl Tennis Begins Weekend Play At Air Force Invitational

The Wyoming tennis team resumed their fall season with a solid showing on the first day of the Air Force Invitational, on Friday.

`We took more strides forward today to where we need to be," said head coach Dean Clower. "Christa played some solid tennis and is beginning to hit her stride. Dorottya showed signs of being extremely tough which we are proud of. Tomorrow is another competitive day with this solid field and the thing I love about these young ladies is I know each day we will improve."

Three Cowgirls were in action on Friday in singles play. In the Alpha singles flight, Dorottya Jonas defeated Adriana Nieto of Northern Colorado, 7-6, 6-0. She will face Natalie Heffron of Colorado State in the quarterfinals. Veronica Popovici, who is in the same draw, got a first round by and will play Meredith Hopson of New Mexico at 10:30 tomorrow morning. In the Bravo singles bracket, Christa Gecheva beat her first round opponent Irinka Toidze of West Virginia, 6-0, 4-2 (ret.) and will play Dominique Dulski (UNM) in the next round. Jessica Parizher takes on Emily Olivier (UNM) tomorrow morning. The other two Cowgirls in action were Silviya Zhelyazkova and Alma Espinosa. Zhelyazkova had a first round by and will face Susan Bakalini of New Mexico, while Espinosa lost to Laura Wehner of Northern Colorado in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1. She will play tomorrow in the back draw.

In doubles play, Wyoming went 2-2 on the day. Gecheva and Espinosa won their opening match, 8-4, over Maddie Buxton and Kwynn Ecton of Colorado State. They will play Hoolahan and Schulte (UNC) in the semifinals tomorrow. Parizher and Zhelyazkova defeated Cooper and Pick (CSU), 8-6, but lost to Tiffany Tran and Jocelle Rudico (AFA) in a tough one, 8-7 (6). The final team in action was Dorottya and Popovici. They would lose to Hailey Barrett and Ikttesh Chahal (West Virginia), 8-6.

The Cowgirls will return to action tomorrow beginning with doubles at 9:00 a.m. and singles action at 12:00 p.m.
