Wyoming Tennis Opens Up First Day at Riviera/ITA All-American Championships

Sept. 29, 2012

All four members of the Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team competed in the first day of the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

"We had a solid performance in doubles," said assistant coach Ewa Szatkowska. "It is nice that Sasa and Alexandra have an opportunity to compete tomorrow. In singles play, the competition is extremely tough. There are no weak players in a tournament like this. They battled hard but couldn't come away with a win."

In the pre-qualifying doubles draw, the team of Alexandra Kovacs and Sasa Nemcova had a solid first day. They defeated Tory Parravi and Reka Rohonyi of Loyola Marymount, 8-4. They will face Whitney Kay and Caroline Price of North Carolina tomorrow morning beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Veronica Popovici and Simona Synkova were both in action today in the pre-qualifying singles bracket. Popovici suffered a 6-4, 6-1 loss against her opponent Rebecca Shine of Louisville. In her only match of the day, Synkova also lost in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 to Emma Levy. They will return to the court on Thursday, Oct. 4, in the main draw of doubles.

Pre-qualifying for the tournament features a singles draw of 64 and a doubles draw of 32. Each player or doubles pair must win three rounds in order to advance to the qualifying draw; a total of eight singles players and four doubles duos move on to qualifying from pre-qualifying play. The qualifying rounds are also comprised of a singles draw of 64 and a doubles draw of 32. Just as with pre-qualifying, a singles player or doubles tandem must win three consecutive matches to stay alive and move into the main draw. Eight spots in the singles main draw are reserved for qualifiers, while the doubles main draw will feature four teams from qualifying.

Singles semifinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 8-11 in Flushing, N.Y.
