The Wyoming tennis team brought home two titles as they wrapped up play at the Air Force Invitational on Sunday in Colorado Springs.
"Congratulations to Veronica, Christa and Alma for bringing home tournament titles," said head coach Dean Clower. "We competed well throughout the weekend. We have to play stronger during the big situations but I know this team and we will come through when it matters."
In the Alpha singles flight, Veronica Popovici defeated Lizette Blankers of New Mexico in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, to take home the title. Dorottya Jonas fell in her consolation match in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 11-9, to Meredith Hopson in the same flight. Silviya Zhelyazkova lost in her finals match, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, to Anamaria Candanoza of Buffalo, while Alma Espinosa fell 6-3, 6-0, to Chloe Forlini of Air Force in the Charlie singles back draw Jessica Parizher won her back draw match, 6-2, 6-2, over Lauren Pick, while Christa Gecheva came up short in three sets, 1-6, 6-2, 10-5, to Vivian Tsui of West Virginia.
The Cowgirls had another strong showing in doubles play as they went 3-0 for the day. Gecheva and Espinosa won the Bravo flight, 8-3, over Hopson and Rachana Bhat of New Mexico. In the back draw of the Alpha doubles, Popovici and Jonas defeated Mary Meyers and Hannah Garcia-Park of Air Force, 8-4, while Parizher and Zhelyazkova defeated Heffron and Wojakowska (CSU), 8-4.
The doubles team of Popovici and Jonas will participate in the ITA All-America Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif. this week. The entire team will resume action at the ITA Mountain Regional, Oct. 9-13, in Las Vegas.
