The University of Wyoming tennis team wrapped up competition Saturday at the Brigham Young University Invitational, held in Provo, Utah.
Wyoming was led by junior Sofi Espinosa and freshman Jen Hancock. Espinosa placed third in flight three singles action, going 3-1 on the weekend. Espinosa defeated Heather Shelby of Air Force 6-3, 6-3 to claim third-place. Hancock finished fourth in flight four by going 2-2. Hancock lost the third-place match to Laurie Cheung of Boise State 7-6, 7-6, which took three hours and forty minutes.
In doubles action, the Cowgirls were led by the team of freshmen Jenny Bowman and Toni Terhaar. Bowman and Terhaar placed fourth in doubles flight one, just missing out on third-place with a close 9-8 match. The doubles teams of Stacy Kneese/Espinosa and Paulina del Monte/Hancock both went 1-2 and didn't place.
The tournament featured many of the top teams in the region. Competing along with Wyoming were Brigham Young, Washington State, Colorado State, Boise State, Air Force, Utah and Utah State.
"We started the tournament out on the right foot," said Wyoming head coach Pam Davis. "We played very well to get things going. But as we advanced, we faced stiffer competition and had some tough matches. There were lots of talented players here and the level of play wasn't like anything we've seen this year so far. We are still learning about ourselves and discovering what combinations work the best for us. But overall it was a solid weekend for us. We had some good performances and our younger players are really coming along."
