Cowgirl Tennis In Action At Air Force Invitational

The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team returned to the courts on Friday as the first day of the Air Force Invitational began in Colorado Springs.

"We played well today," said UW head coach Kati Gyulai. "I think the past two weeks of preparation made a difference for us. As a team, we competed and individually had some outstanding showings. We advanced two out of the three doubles into the semi-finals. In singles, Veronica, Simona, Carly and Sasa advanced into the semi-finals as well. We look to continue advancing in the draws."

In singles play, the Cowgirls had a good showing as four out of seven advanced to semifinal round. Freshman Veronica Popovici went 2-0 on the day as she won her opening match over Jill Kappel (UNC), 6-2, 6-0, and then defeated Christen Monreal (AFA), 7-6, 6-2. She will play Pavlina Smatova of Oregon. Simona Synkova earned a straight set victory, 6-4, 6-2, over Stephanie Macfarlane (UNCG), and will play Tessa Lang of Iowa State. Sophomore Sasa Nemcova also went 2-0 in her first day of competition. She earned a win over Michaela Oldani (New Mexico), 6-0, 1-0 (ret.) and then followed it up with a tough three set victory, 1-6, 6-3, 10-8, against Lana Buttner of Oregon. In her only match of the day, senior Carly Van Hollen defeated Molly McDevitt (Oregon), 7-6 (5), 6-0.

Other Cowgirls in action include senior Kim van Ginkel, who won her opening match against Adriana Nieto of Northern Colorado, 6-3, 6-0, but lost a tough three set match, 7-6, 3-6, 10-8, against Lacey Smyth (Arizona). Rebecca Berger also won her first match of the day, 6-4, 6-0, over Lyla Simmons. She would lose her second of the day against Michala Jensen (Colorado), 7-5, 6-3. Sophomore Alexandra Kovacs lost her only match of the day, 6-4, 6-2, against Alisa Buslaieva (Oklahoma State).

In doubles play, three teams were in action today. The team of Synkova and van Ginkel earned a 9-7 win over Malika Rose and Alisa Buslaieva of Oklahoma State. They will face Patricia Skowronski and Pavlina Smatova of Oregon tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. in the semifinals of their draw. Popovici and Van Hollen won their only match of the day with an 8-6 victory against Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr and Celine Donnet of Eastern Michigan. In their next match Saturday morning, they will play Cassman and Voigt of Air Force. The final team of Alexandra Kovacs and Rebecca Berger lost 8-5 in their opening match of the day to Rogers and Wilkins (UNCG), but rebounded in the backdraw. They defeated Filliol and Whateley of Northern Colorado, 8-0. They will Michala Jensen and Kristina Schleich of Colorado at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Both singles and doubles action will continue tomorrow and Sunday.
