Cowgirl Tennis Opens Season With 7-0 Win

Wyoming tennis started the season on theright foot after defeating the University of Northern Colorado 7-0 at the UWTennis Courts. The Cowgirls won all three doubles matches and their sevensingles to begin the fall season at 1-0.

Wyoming's number one player, sophomore Jenny Bowman, played a well-foughtmatch, coming from behind in the first set to win, 7-5 over UNC's Jan Ikeda. She won the next set 6-4.

Six of the matches were won in two sets by the Cowgirls, though number twoplayer Sofi Espinosa, a senior, played three. Espinosa lost the first set,1-6 to Jodie Sato, but came back in the final two for the victory, 6-2 and6-0.

"This was a great first match for us," Wyoming's head tennis coach PamWildt said. "We worked out our first match jitters, and we should be moreprepared for our next tournament at New Mexico, a much tougher competition."

The Cowgirls, a young team of only two upperclassmen and six underclassmen,looks much more polished and composed than last season.

"Last year we were really young," Wildt said. "We've grown a lot in ayear, especially players like Bowman, Jennifer Hancock and Toni Terhaar.Overall, we have a stronger team unity, and they're all just betterplayers."

Wyoming has only one more fall tournament at New Mexico Oct. 12-14 toqualify players for Central Regionals, which are held Oct. 24-28 in Tulsa,Okla.
