Two Wyoming Cowgirl singles players and one UW doubles team came away with titles at the Air Force Invitational, on Sunday, in Colorado Springs.
"We had a great tournament," said Wyoming head coach Kati Gyulai. "Veronica won her first collegiate tournament and we took home two more flight championships. I am pleased to see the improvements we made from two weeks go ago."
In singles play, it started off with freshman Veronica Popovici who won her flight with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 victory over Niltooki Wilkins of UNC Greensboro. Sasa Nemcova was the other Cowgirl to come away with a finals win in her draw. She defeated Nikolina Grbac of New Mexico, 6-2, 6-4. In the back draw, Rebecca Berger defeated Annette Rios (UNCG), 6-2, 6-4, as did Kim van Ginkel over Stephanie Macfarlane of UNC Greensboro, 6-0, 6-1. Sophomore Alexandra Kovacs lost in the back draw in three sets, 6-2, 1-6, 10-7 against Miriam Westerink (Eastern Michigan), while Simona Synkova fell to Lacey Smyth (Arizona), 6-1, 6-2. In the other finals match, Carly Van Hollen lost to Megumi Voigt of Air Force, 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles play, the team of Carly Van Hollen and Veronica Popovici defeated Michaela Bezdickova and Amy Shipperd of New Mexico, 8-2. Berger and Kovacs also won their back draw match against Jensen and Schleich of Colorado, 8-4. The other doubles team in action, van Ginkel and Synkova, earned an 8-6 win over Lang and Macedo of Iowa State.
