Tennis Starts Off Winning At The Washington State Invite

The University of Wyoming CowgirlTennis team traveled to Pullman, WA today to compete in the WashingtonState Invitational. The team had seven wins in the first round ofsingles and three wins in doubles play.

The day started with team captain, Melanie Roberts who played heropponent tough in her first match, but could not pull out a win againstMontana State's Mariska Steenkamp with a score of 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.However Roberts did defeat her second opponent, Jessica Redding fromMontana 6-2, 6-3.

Sarah Kay, playing in the number two position for the Cowgirls, foundvictory in both of her matches today advancing her to the next roundtomorrow. She defeated her first opponent Alexandria Jensen fromMontana State, in a three set match, scoring 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. She alsodefeated Zeljka Vidic from Idaho 6-2, 6-1 in her second match of today.

Sophomore, Sofia Espinosa, split her matches today with one victoryover Barbara Kukilkova from Idaho 6-4, 6-2. However, she was defeatedby Boise State's Renate Stoop in two sets scoring 6-1, 6-3.

Senior Shirley Mendoza also split her matches scoring 6-0, 6-3 in herfirst match against Rachel Drummond from Montana State, and losing inher second match against Vida Senci of Idaho 6-2, 6-4.

The only freshman on the Cowgirl team, Paulina del Monte only had onematch today, which she lost and recieved a bye for her second match.Del Monte was defeated by Jemina Attard of Boise State, 6-0, 6-3.

Angela Dossetor and Amanda Roberts followed their teammates examplesand both added one win and one loss to their record as well. Angela wasdefeated in her first match versus Gloriana Serrano of Idaho 6-0, 6-2,and won her second match against Montana's Kate Kohlschreiber 6-1, 6-2,while Amanda Roberts won her first match against Staci Rust from MontanaState, 6-1, 6-2, but lost her second match to Idaho's Cameron Erickson6-2, 6-2.

Sophomore Lindsay McPhail only played one match today and fought hardfor a victory, but lost to Montana State's Nellie Crowley in three sets,1-6, 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles, Kay and Dossetor, Mendoza and del Monte, and A. Roberts andMcPhail all found victories scoring 8-3, 8-1, and 8-1 respectively.
