PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. -
The doubles team of Simona Synkova and Kim van Ginkel represented the University of Wyoming Tennis team as they opened up play at this year's ITA All-American Championships, on Thursday, at the Riviera Tennis Club.
In their opening match of the day, they defeated the 43rd ranked team of Rebecca Delgado and Tatsiana Kapshai of Sacramento State by a score of 8-4. They will face Josipa Bek and Keri Wong of Clemson, who are the fifth ranked doubles team, tomorrow morning.
"We played clean and executed well today," said head coach Kati Gyulai. "Our second serve percentage was excellent. We were able to convert the two break points that we had, which was the difference. We look forward to playing Clemson tomorrow morning."
This top hard court event of the fall collegiate season features the top players in Division I. The tournament includes six rounds of prequalifying and qualifying matches which began on Saturday, October 2, 2010. The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships are hosted by the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. for the 26th consecutive year.
Synkova and van Ginkel enter the fall season as the 32nd ranked doubles team in the country as selected by the preseason Campbell/ITA doubles rankings. Last season, the duo finished the year 59th nationally, while placing fourth amongst teams in the Mountain Region.
They finished the 2010 spring season with a record of 11-7 overall and 4-4 in the league, which helped them earn All-Mountain West Conference honors. Their victories all came at the number one position.
