Cowgirl Tennis Begins First Day of Competition at Gaucho Classic

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -

The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team opened up the first day of play at the Gaucho Classic, on Friday, in Santa Barbara, Calif.

In doubles play, three teams were in action on the first day. Veronica Popovici and Simona Synkova won their opening round, 8-3, over Sofia Novak and Paola Cos of UC Santa Barbara. The team of Sasa Nemcova and Christa Gecheva won their match against Miya Jin and Tory Parravi, 8-4. The team of Alexandra Kovacs and Jessica Parizher lost 8-4 to Jocelyn Davis and Kathryn Webb of Cal Poly. Second round doubles action will resume again tomorrow at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.

In first round singles action, Veronica Popovici won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, to defeat Jocelyn Davis. Simona Synkova also won in two sets, 6-0, 7-5, against Tory Parravi. Alexandra Kovacs defeated Ghizelene Dobballah of Northern Arizona in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Christa Gecheva was the fourth Cowgirl to earn a victory on the day as she beat Elisaveta Pironkovas of Loyola Marymount, 6-0, 6-4. Sasa Nemcova won the first set, 6-3, and was up in the second set 3-0 against her opponent Reka Rohonyi of Loyola Marymount who retired. Alma Espinosa won her opening match, 6-1, 6-1, against Lauren Pick of CSU, but lost in three sets, 6-0, 1-6, 7-5 to Stacy Yam of UC Santa Barbara. Jessica Parizher fell in straight sets to Natalia Lozano of UC Santa Barbara, 7-5, 6-1. Singles action begins tomorrow at 11 a.m. Pacific Time.
