Wyoming Tennis Finishes First Day at the USAFA Invitational

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Wyoming tennis team finished the first day at the USAFA Invitational on Friday. Leadingthe way thus far for Wyoming is freshman Corina Lazar. Lazar hasdefeated both her opponents that she faced in the tournament. Shedefeated Joanna Furdyna of UTEP, then in the semi-final she beatJennifer Ryba of the University of New Mexico 6-1, 7-5. Lazar willplay in the flight four singles final tomorrow.

Sophomore Karolina Rowinski went 1-1 during singles play today, asshe dropped her first match 6-1, 6-0. Rowinski rebounded from herfirst loss to win her second in a tough 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 match againstCiara Finucane from Georgia Southern. Rowinski will compete in thefifth place match on Saturday.

In the flight eight round robin, freshman Michelle Brown defeatedboth her opponents that she faced on Friday. Brown defeated BrookeStern of CU 6-4, 6-4, then she beat Allison Quinn, also from CU, 6-2, 6-2.Other Cowgirls who competed in singles play were junior Patricia Chien,sophomores Andrea House and Amy Senko, and freshman Kim Romero.

In doubles play Patricia Chien and partner Karolina Rowinski weredefeated by Strandemo and Vanderdys of CU 8-0. The freshman duo ofCorina Lazar and Kim Romero were defeated 8-2 in their only doublesmatch of the day. In the flight three doubles match Andrea House andpartner junior Gwen Moser were defeated by Sedivec and Nurmi of CU8-4.

The Cowgirls will resume play again tomorrow in Colorado Springs.The first matches are slated to begin at 9:00 a.m.
