The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team began competition in the opening round of the 2013 ITA Mountain Regional Championships, on Wednesday in Las Vegas, Nev.
"We had some ups and downs today, but overall we did well," said head coach Dean Clower. It's good to see Christa and Alma continuing to play solid doubles. Dorrotya and Jessica played some great singles and continue taking strides forward. If we play tomorrow like we did today we will continue going deeper in the draws."
Two doubles teams opened up the first day of competition for the Cowgirls. Juniors Alma Espinosa and Christa Gecheva defeated Chloe Forlini and Lily Forlini of Air Force, 8-5, but the team of Jessica Parizher and Silviya Zhelyazkova fell to Mayci Jones and Toby Miclat of BYU, 8-4. Veronica Popovici and Dorottya Jonas earned a first round bye and will take the court tomorrow in their first doubles action. They will play Gbadamosi and Driver of Montana.
Two of the six Cowgirls won their first round matches in singles. The top seed for the Cowgirls Popovici had a first round bye and will play Sammie Watson of Boise State tomorrow. Parizher had a solid straight set win, 6-1, 6-1, over Alexis Turley of Utah State, and will play Morgan Basil of Boise State in the next round. The other Cowgirl to come away with a victory on the day was freshman Dorottya Jonas. She needed three sets, 6-7, 6-1, 6-2, over Dhanielly Quevedo of Colorado. Her next match will be against Kathryn Hughes of Denver.
Espinosa, Gecheva, Zhelyazkova and Alena Vasileva each suffered first round losses. Gecheva lost to Mackenna Maddox of BYU in three sets, 1-6, 6-1, 7-6, while Zhelyazkova came up short against Lucia Kovarcikova of Utah, 6-2, 6-4. Vasileva fell to Caroline Schnell of Denver, 6-2, 6-1 and Sarah Maria Spruch defeated Espinosa, 6-1, 6-2. They will all move into the consolation bracket.
The second and third round of singles and second round of doubles play will continue tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 10, in Las Vegas.
