LAS VEGAS, Nev. -
Two doubles teams, plus three singles players continued play on Thursday at the 2013 ITA Mountain Regional Championships in Las Vegas. Play was limited to main draw doubles and one round of main draw singles as rain delayed the morning session of the event.
"We played some good tennis today," said head coach Dean Clower. "The ladies really got after it and played UW tennis. Doubles was solid even though we came up short in one match. To have three players this far in the draw is a good sign for us. We always talk about professionalism with the team and we've done that so far this week. We were proud to coach this team today."
The second seeded team in the tournament Veronica Popovici and Dorottya Jonas opened up their tournament with an 8-6 victory over Precious Gbadamosi and Haley Driver of Montana. They will take on Savannah Ware and Morgan Anderson of BYU in the Round of 16. Alma Espinosa and Christa Gecheva took on Julyette Steur and Ashley Tiefel of Colorado and came up short 8-5 in their match.
All three players left in the main draw of singles play were solid on the day. Popovici won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, over her opponent Sammie Watson of Boise State, as did Parizher against Morgan Basil (BSU), 6-3, 7-5. Freshman Dorottya Jonas needed three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, to pull out her win over Kathryn Hughes of Denver. They will now move into the round of 32 in the draw.
Play will continue tomorrow with one round of doubles and two rounds of singles action. The tournament is scheduled to wrap up on Sunday.
