In a rain plagued first day, the Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team began competition in the opening round of the 2012 ITA Mountain Regional Championships, on Wednesday in Las Vegas, Nev.

"It was a long day, but everyone stayed focused and played well," said head coach Dean Clower. "We were mentally strong and we need to continue to maintain that attitude."

Six Cowgirls won their first round matches, which was shortened due to the weather. The top seed for the Cowgirls Veronica Popovici won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, over Rita Bermudez of Idaho. Her next match will be against Emma Isberg of Denver. Senior Alexandra Kovacs had a solid 6-4, 6-0 win over Jennifer Weissmann of Colorado State. Two sophomores also made their presence known on the first day. Christa Gecheva defeated Bobbie Oshiro of Boise State, 6-2, 6-2, and will play UNLV's Aleksandra Josifoska of UNLV. Jessica Parizher lost only three games to win her match, 6-0, 6-3, over Annemieke Witte of New Mexico State. She will face Callie Craig of Utah. The other two Cowgirls to come away with wins were Sasa Nemcova and Simona Synkova. Synkova cruised through her match, 6-0, 6-1, over Liana Bales of Montana State, while Nemcova defeated Hannah Stone of Northern Arizona in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6.

Alma Espinosa and Silviya Zhelyazkova each suffered first round losses. Espinosa lost to Sophia Bergner (Denver), 6-2, 6-3, while Zhelyazkova fell in two sets, 6-4, 6-0, against Sophie Stevens of Nevada. They will now move into the consolation bracket.

Due to delays with the weather, they would begin doubles action late on Wednesday night. The top seeded team of Popovici and Synkova defeated Paul and Young of BYU, 8-6, while the duo of Nemcova and Kovacs won 8-0 against Tsan and Bates. Unfortunately, Espinosa and Gecheva lost to Besdickova and Sablina of New Mexico, 9-7.

Singles and doubles play will continue tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 11, in Las Vegas. Full results can be found at
