LAS VEGAS, Nev. -
Three doubles teams continued their way through the bracket on Thursday at the 2012 ITA Mountain Regional Championships. Play was limited to main draw doubles as rain continued to be a problem for the outdoor event.
"For us to have three teams remaining in the main draw of doubles is a great start for us," said head coach Dean Clower. "Silviya and Jessica continue to improve and had a well-deserved win over the number one team for Air Force. We must continue our solid play and look to go deep in the singles draw tomorrow."
It was a tough battle for the top seeded team of Veronica Popovici and Simona Synkova as they defeated Tiefel and Watrous of Colorado, 9-8. They will face Pham and Smith of Utah in the round of 16. The duo of Silviya Zhelyazkova and Jessica Parizher had a thriller of a match. Down 7-2 against the top team of Dake and Cecil from Air Force, they fought all the way back with seven straight games to win the match 9-7 to advance. Their next match will be against the second seed Bergner and Rath of Denver. The final team in action was seniors Alexandra Kovacs and Sasa Nemcova who beat Driver and Carter of Montana, 8-3. They move on to play Lozano and Sanz of Idaho.
Doubles will resume again on Saturday, while they will try and get in two rounds of singles tomorrow. Rain is forecast for the morning in Las Vegas. Full results can be found at http://www.unlvrebels.com/sports/w-tennis/spec-rel/unlv-12-ita-regional.html.
