Two members of the Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team reached the quarterfinals of the singles draw at the 2012 ITA Mountain Regional Championships.
"We had some solid play today," said head coach Dean Clower. "Veronica had a good day in singles and the underclassmen are progressing. Congratulations to Veronica and Alexandra for reaching the quarterfinals tomorrow. We will continue in doubles action as well and need to come out with high energy."
Junior Veronica Popovici earned two victories on the day to advance. She needed three sets to defeat Emma Isberg of Denver, 5-7, 6-0, 6-1, which she followed up with a straight set win, 6-0, 6-0, against Janine Erasmus of UNLV. The other Cowgirl to move into the quarterfinal round was senior Alexandra Kovacs. She earned a 6-2, 6-4 win against Aubrey Paul of BYU and then went three sets with McKenzie Davis of Utah State, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. They will both play tomorrow.
Four other Cowgirls were also in action on the day. Simona Synkova won her opening match of the day over Denise Van Der Ben (New Mexico State), 6-4, 6-0, but lost to Sandy Vo of Boise State, 6-3, 7-6. Jessica Parizher also won her first match of the day against Callie Craig of Utah, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, unfortunately she lost to Marlena Pietzuch of Boise State, 6-2, 6-2. Sasa Nemcova and Christa Gecheva both lost in their only matches of the day. Nemcova fell to Sarah Pham of Utah, 6-2, 6-3, and Gecheva had a tough match against the 89th ranked Alexsandra Josifoska, losing 6-0, 6-1.
