Seven singles players from the Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team began competition in the opening round of the 2011 ITA Mountain Regional Championships, on Wednesday in Las Vegas, Nev.
Sophomore Veronica Popovici earned a first round bye and in the round of 32 she defeated Hannah Dake of Air Force, 6-3, 6-1. She will face Anett Ferenczi Bako (UNLV) tomorrow. Simona Synkova and Jennifer Parizher each won their first two matches of the day to reach the round of 32. Synkova won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, against Romina Nedakovic of Utah State, and Aubrey Paul of BYU, 6-0, 6-3. She is set to play Sarah Pham of Utah on Thursday afternoon. Freshman Jessica Parizher defeated Alyssa Caffey of New Mexico, 6-1, 6-0, but needed three sets, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1, over Sonia Klamczynska of Boise State. Her opponent tomorrow will be Winde Janssens of Colorado.
Sasa Nemcova got through the first round with a victory over Megan Sheehan Dixon (BYU), 6-3, 6-4, but fell to Emma Verberne of Nevada, 6-2, 7-5. Junior Alexandra Kovacs won her opening match as well, 7-6, 6-2, against Juliette Legendre of Nevada. She lost in the next round in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, to Caroline Schnell of Denver.
The final two Cowgirls in action, freshman Christa Gecheva fell to Manon Sylvain of New Mexico State in three sets, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, as did Alma Espinosa who lost to Melissa Cecil of Air Force, 6-2, 6-4.
