Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team members Veronica Popovici and Simona Synkova reached the semifinals of the doubles draw, while Popovici earned a spot in the singles draw at the 2012 ITA Mountain Regional Championships, on Saturday, in Las Vegas.
"I thought today was big day of progressing as a team," said head coach Dean Clower. "Alexandra played really good tennis and came up with a solid win against Denver and battled with one of the top players from UNLV. We will need to come out aggressive tomorrow and get going early in each match."
Three doubles teams took to the courts in the main doubles draw. The 21st ranked team of Simona Synkova and Veronica Popovici moved their way into the semifinals with two victories. They would defeat Sarah Pham and Natasha Smith of Utah, 8-6, in the quarterfinals followed by an 8-4 win against Aleksandra Josifoska and Iren Kotseva (UNLV). Jessica Parizher and Silviya Zhelyazkova earned an 8-3 win over Sophia Bergner and Steffi Rath of Denver in their quarterfinal match. They would fall in the next round to Paige Miles and Tereza Bekerova of Utah, 8-2. The other duo in action was Alexandra Kovacs and Sasa Nemcova who lost to Idaho's Victoria Lozano and Almudena Sanz, 8-4.
In singles action, Alexandra Kovacs and Veronica Popovici were the remaining individuals in the main draw. Popovici moved into the semifinals of the tournament with two key wins. She started off with a three set victory over Marlena Pietzuch of Boise State, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0, and followed it up with another three set thriller, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, over Nives Pavlovic of UNLV. Kovacs won in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6, over Sophia Bergner of Denver. She would come up short against Lucia Batta of UNLV in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, in the round of eight.
Matches will resume tomorrow in Las Vegas.
