Cowgirl Tennis Begins Play at Mountain Regional Tournament

    Seven singles players from the Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team began competition in the opening round of the 2010 ITA Mountain Regional Championships, on Wednesday in Las Vegas, Nev.

    In singles action, two Cowgirls, Veronica Popovici and Alexandra Kovacs each earned byes in the first round. Popovici will take on Jill Kappel of Northern Colorado in her opening match, while Kovacs defeated Michaela Jensen (Colorado), 6-4, 6-2. Simona Synkova defeated her opening round opponent Charlotte Harlmarsson of Montana State, 7-5, 1-6, 6-1. She will play Megan Price of BYU. Sasa Nemcova defeated Stephanie Jasper (Boise State) in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, but fell to Sarah Pham of Utah in three sets, 5-7, 6-1, 6-0, in the second round. The other Cowgirl to come away with a first round victory was senior Kim van Ginkel. She defeated Manan Sylvain (New Mexico State), 6-3, 6-1 and will face Evgenia Kryuchkova (Utah) in the next round. Popovici, Synkova and van Ginkel were still playing at the time of the press release.

    The other two Cowgirls in action, senior Rebecca Berger was defeated by Liza Azhova of BYU, 6-0, 6-0 as was Carly Van Hollen as she fell to Malia Wahinepio of Northern Arizona, 2-6, 6-0, 6-1.

    Singles and doubles play will continue tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 14, in Las Vegas.
