The Wyoming Cowgirl Tennis team moved through the second day of action at the 2010 USTA/ITA Mountain Regional Tournament, on Thursday, in Las Vegas, Nev. Five of the seven singles players and all three doubles teams took the court.
It was a tough day for all three doubles teams as they posted a 1-3 record. Sasa Nemcova and Carly Van Hollen were the only team to earn a victory as they defeated Kassia Adamson and Michelle Warwick of Weber State, 8-1. Unfortunately, they fell to Charlotta Hjarlmarsson and Paulina Lopez (Montana State), 9-7. Simona Synkova and Kim van Ginkel lost to Bran and Whitney Paluch of Montana, 8-5, as did Berger and Kovacs, 8-0, against Natalie Dunn and Caroline Schnell of Denver.
In singles play, Veronica Popovici defeated Jill Kappel of Northern Colorado, 6-0, 6-1, to reach the round of 32 and play Morgan Basil of Boise State. She would come away with a straight set win, 6-2, 6-3, over Basil. Popovici will now play Emma Verberne of Nevada on Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. Simona Synkova also defeated her opponent, Megan Price of BYU, 6-4, 7-5. She then went on to face Sophia Bergner of Denver in the next round, and came up short with a 6-0, 6-2 loss. Sophomore Alexandra Kovacs also had a tough day with a 6-2, 7-5 defeat by Marlena Pietzuch (Boise State).
In other action, Rebecca Berger and Carly Van Hollen were in the consolation round. Van Hollen defeated Anja Villanueva of New Mexico in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 10-6. Berger had to withdraw because of illness.
Day three of singles and doubles play will continue tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 15 in Las Vegas.
