Three individual singles players and two doubles teams advanced to the next round to begin the 2014 ITA Mountain Regional Championships, on Wednesday in Albuquerque.
"Overall, we had a very successful day one to the tournament," head coach Dean Clower said. "It was great to see Jessica (Parizher) back on the court and bringing intensity to the team."
Two doubles teams opened up the first day of competition for the Cowgirls. Seniors Christa Gecheva and Jessica Parizher defeated Lily Forlini and Natasha Rizvi of Air Force, 8-5. They will face LaLone and Vosburgh of Boise State tomorrow. Cecilia Mercier and Silviya Zhelyazkova suffered an 8-2 loss against Lucia Badillos and Emmie Marx of Idaho. The team of Dorottya Jonas and Magdalena Stencel received a first round bye and will take the court against Guensler and Turley of Utah State on Thursday.
Three of the six Cowgirls won their first round matches in singles. Jonas had a first round bye and will play Duda Santos of UTEP tomorrow afternoon. Gecheva needed three-sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, against Gracia Mboko of Denver. Her next opponent will be Morgan Anderson-Littlewood of BYU. The other Cowgirl to come away with a victory on the day was junior Nastya Tokareva. She defeated Jessica Brycki of Montana State in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, and will face Meredith Hopson of New Mexico.
Mercier, Stencel and Zhelyazkova each suffered first round losses and will move into the consolation bracket. Mercier lost to Natalie Heffron (Colorado State), 7-5, 6-3, while Stencel retired against Santa Shumilina of UNLV, 6-1, 4-1 (ret.). Zhelyazkova had a tough three-set battle, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, against Lucia Kovarcikova of Utah.
The second and third round of singles and second round of doubles play will continue tomorrow in Albuquerque.
