Sophomore Dorottya Jonas continued her strong play on Friday as she reached the quarterfinals of the main draw singles bracket at the ITA Mountain Regional Tournament in Albuquerque.
"We had another good day at the courts," head coach Dean Clower said. "All the players did something today to get better. Dorottya grinded through another round in the main draw and showed a lot of toughness. It's always great as a coach to see the fast improvement as a team."
After falling in the first set, 6-3, against Alexandra Aiello of Colorado, Jonas battled back. She would win both the second set, 7-6 (6), and third set, 7-6 (3) in a tiebreaker to come away with the victory. She will now face the top-seed in the tournament Tereza Bekerova of Utah tomorrow.
In the consolation singles, senior Silviya Zhelyazkova reached the quarterfinals as well with a straight set win, 6-4, 7-6, over Courtney Schulte of Northern Colorado. Freshman Cecilia Mercier lost 6-2, 6-1 against Marie-Pier Thiffault of New Mexico State to end her tournament run.
The quarterfinals and semifinals of singles action plus the semifinals of doubles will be played on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. MT.
