SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -

Two Cowgirls opened up with singles play on the first day of ITA Central Region Championship competition, on Wednesday, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Sophomore Corina Lazar started things off with a two set win, 6-3, 6-1 over Andrea Barker of Utah State, but fell short in her second match of the day with a 6-3, 7-5 loss to Dolly Chang of Brigham Young.

Things went well in the opening round for junior Karolina Rowinski as she defeated Allison Sine in a tough three set match (6-3, 2-6, 11-9). Unfortunately, she ran in to Lauren Simmons of Oklahoma State who ended her singles play with a two-set loss (7-5, 6-3).

"I was very pleased with the way Corina and Karolina competed in their matches today," said head coach Kristen Hall. "We were only a few points away from winning second round matches. I'm looking forward to the main draw matches tomorrow."

On Thursday, the doubles team of Patricia Chien and Karolina Rowinski will be in action against Melissa Cornett and Vlata Jovanovic of Arkansas to start off the main draw, while Chien also opens up in singles play in the main draw.
