Morozova Leads Cowgirl Tennis at CU Invite

October 26, 1998

The University of Wyoming women's tennis team competed this last weekend, Oct. 23-25, at the CU Invitational in Boulder, Colorado. The Cowgirls were led by freshman Natalie Morozova who won the B-Flight in singles, and by the team of Melanie Roberts and Morozova who placed second in the doubles bracket. Besides the Cowgirls, the Montana State Bobcats participated in the three day tournament, as well as the host University of Colorado Buffaloes.

Morozova went 3-0 in singles play for Wyoming on her way to winning her singles flight. All three of the opponents that Morozova defeated were from CU, a team that finished last season ranked 32nd nationally and returned all their letterwinners this season. Morozova defeated CU's Anna Bek 6-1, 6-1 in the finals

Morozova and doubles partner Melanie Roberts also had a great weekend in doubles as they advanced to the finals with two close wins, only to lose to CU's Mahon and Garrow 8-3. In their semifinal match Roberts and Morozova defeated CU's Bek and Bek, a team that was nationally ranked last season, by a score of 9-8 (8-6).

Wyoming's final action of the spring will be November 4 - 8, at the Rolex Central Regional Tournament in Salt Lake City, Utah. Cowgirls Melanie Roberts and Sarah Kay will compete in the main draw for Wyoming, while Natalie Morozova and Lisa Pruett will try and earn a spot in the main draw by winning two matches in the qualifying round. The teams of Roberts/Morozova and Kay/Pruett will also compete in the doubles main draw.

Quotes from head coach Kilmeny Waterman following the CU Invite: "This was a good tournament for us because of the high level of competition. We ran into CU a lot and they are a very deep and talented team. That high level of competition was valuable experience for us.

"One of the bright spots for us in this tournament was definitely Natalie winning her flight. Her winning as easily as she did was good to see. The other was our doubles team of Melanie and Natalie getting to the finals. To get to the finals was a big break through for them and a great confidence builder.

"The doubles team of Kay and Pruett also played very well. They didn't win as much as they should have but they're coming along. They will be a solid team for us, and for us to go into spring with two solid doubles teams will be a big help.

"We have about a week of practice before Rolex and we're going to keep playing matches and keep them in competitive shape. We will have some matches against very good players at Rolex and those will be great opportunities for us to gain some recognition."
