Veronica Popovici and Simona Synkova of the Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team fought back and won their consolation match, on Friday morning at the 2011 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. They now finish the fall with a 9-1 record overall.
"We competed well today and raised our level of play," said head coach Kati Gyulai. "Simona served very well and Veronica had excellent activity at the net. We conclude the fall play at Indoor Nationals and we look to build on this success in the spring".
They defeated the team of Ana Belzunce and Welma Luus of Maryland by the score of 8-5. Popovici and Synkova were behind 3-2 in the early part of the match, but won the next three of five sets to even it up at five all. They would earn the victory by taking the final three sets in order to win the match 8-5.
The tournament runs from Thursday, Nov. 3-Sunday, Nov. 6 and is held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
Other members of the Cowgirl tennis team are in action this weekend at the Utah Invitational. It begins today, Friday, Nov. 4, and goes through Sunday, Nov. 6.
