The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team returned to the courts on Friday as the first day of the Lobo Invitational began in Albuquerque.
In singles action, five out of the six singles players had a solid day of play. Senior Kim van Ginkel defeated both of her opponents. She earned a victory over Gabi Vazquez of UTEP, 7-5, 6-1, and then followed it up with a straight set win, 6-1, 7-5 over Yumi Hasegawa of Northern Arizona. Sophomore Simona Synkova opened up her day with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Doris Berberic of Western New Mexico as did Sasa Nemcova against Alice Walker of Northern Arizona, 6-2, 6-2. Senior Carly Van Hollen also defeated her first round opponent Molly McDevitt of Oregon, 6-2, 6-0, while freshman Veronica Popovici pulled out a three set win, 3-6, 7-5, 6-0, over Marina Trierweiler of UTEP.
The other Cowgirl in action, Alexandra Kovacs lost to Elizabeth Ullathorne (Texas Tech), 6-2, 6-7, 6-4.
In doubles action, the team of Synkova and van Ginkel earned an 8-5 win over Basil and Jasper of Boise State. The other doubles team to win on the day was Kovacs and Popovici as they pulled out a tough 9-7 win over Golovics and Suhajda of Northern Arizona.
Singles and doubles play will continue tomorrow, Saturday, November 6.
