DALLAS, Texas -
One doubles team and an individual earned victories as the Wyoming tennis team opened up play at the Blue and Red Challenge on Friday afternoon. The Cowgirls were paired up for individual matches in singles and doubles against the SMU Mustangs.
"We did a lot of things well today and there are still some that need to be corrected," head coach Dean Clower said. "We can't get down early and wait to make adjustments. Overall, we have improved and come a long way over the fall."
It was a tough start in doubles action as SMU won three of the four matches. The team of Christa Gecheva and Magdalena Stencel came away with the only win of the day. They defeated Anna Kate Anderson and Macie Elliott in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3. Cecilia Mercier and Silviya Zhelyazkova lost 8-3 to Yana Erkeeva and Mary Wright, while Dorottya Jonas and Stencel dropped their match 8-6 against Vaszilisza Bulgakova and Dasha Sharapova. The final duo of the day, Jessica Parizher and Gecheva lost to Hristina Dishkova and Holly Verner 8-3.
Junior Nastya Tokareva won the only singles match for the Cowgirls on the day. She defeated Bulgakova, 7-6, 7-5. Jonas fell to Dishkova, 6-2, 6-4, followed by Zhelyazkova with a 7-5, 6-0 loss against Erkeeva. Sharapova won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, over Parizher and Wright defeated Mercier, 6-3, 6-2.
