LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The University of Wyoming Cowgirl Tennis team competed in the Rolex Regioinal Championships this past weekend in Salt Lake City, UT. The team had some success and some losses, however they ended their fall season with some confidence, defeating several of the top players both in singles and doubles.

Only two of the Cowgirls, senior Shirley Mendoza and sophomore Sofia Espinosa, saw action on the first day and were competing in the qualifying round of the tournament.

Espinosa was the first to compete for the Cowgirls and had a tough match losing in three sets to New Mexico's Courtney Choate 6-4, 4-6, 7-4. Mendoza didn't have much luck either and lost in two to Nadine Lynn of Air Force 6-2, 6-1. Although in the qualifying round it was single elimination, both Espinosa and Mendoza competed in doubles play throughout the tournament.

Senior Cowgirls, Sarah Kay and Melanie Roberts competed on day two in the singles main draw. Kay competed against Kansas State's Eva Novotna and defeated her in three sets scoring 6-3, 5-7, 7-6, which advanced Kay to the round of 32. Roberts competed against Allison Lisle of Colorado State, who had defeated Shirley Mendoza 6-0, 6-0 at the CU Challege on Oct. 1-2. Roberts defeated Allison Lisle in two sets scoring 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the round of 32, as well.

Unfortunately, in the round of 32 both Kay and Roberts were eliminated. Kay faced Cheryl Mallaiah of Kansas and was defeated in two, scoring 7-5, 6-3, while Roberts faced Anna Friganovic of New Mexico and was alsodefeated in two sets, scoring 6-1, 6-2. Friganovic went on to play in the Championship match.

In doubles play, the Cowgirls had a little better luck. The doubles team of Sofi Espinosa and Melanie Roberts started by defeating their Denver opponents 8-6 to advance to the round of 32, while Sarah Kay and Shirley Mendoza were defeated by a Nebraska team 8-2. Roberts and Espinosa then faced a Tulsa team of Monica Poveda and Jana Sidovic, who defeated them 8-5 in the round of 32. However, the Cowgirls would combine their efforts with Melanie Roberts and Shirley Mendoza to make it to the semifinal round of the consolation bracket. Roberts and Mendoza started their bracket play against a Colorado State team of Amanda Bartz and Catherine Sullivan and defeated them 8-3 to advance to the quarterfinal round. They then defeated a BYU team of Kelly and Oswald 8-4, before finally going down to a New Mexico team of Choate and Spolica 8-3 in the Semifinal round. The team of Choate and Spolica went on to defeat their next opponent 8-4 to take the Championships for the consolation bracket.
