LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming tennis team will host two of its four home matches this upcoming weekend. The Cowgirls will welcome the Drake Bulldogs, on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. MT, and the Northern Colorado Bears, on Sunday at 11 a.m. Both matches will be played at the UW Indoor Tennis Complex. Promotions for this weekend include post-match autographs on both days while McAlister's breakfast sandwiches will be handed out to fans on Sunday (while supplies last).
"The team is looking forward to being able to play in front of the best fans in the country this weekend," UW head coach Dean Clower said. "We lost to Drake a year ago on the road and we are looking to reverse that this year. The staff and I are very pleased with how the team is progressing and if we continue doing that we should be in good shape come conference season. Northern Colorado is a vastly improved team this year and has very strong doubles combinations across the board. We will need to be on top of our game to come up with two wins this weekend."
The Cowgirls enter the weekend with a 4-3 record overall after a split over this past weekend. Sophomore Magdalena Stencel has a 13-6 overall singles mark and a 5-1 record this spring, while junior Dorottya Jonas brings in an 12-7 singles record. Senior Nastya Tokareva also sports a 12-8 record in singles play. In doubles action, Stencel and Tokareva are 9-4 overal and 5-2 in dual play. Head coach Dean Clower enters his fifth season at the helm and his current record stands at 54-37 overall.
The Bulldogs enter the contest with a 4-2 record overall and will face Northern Colorado prior to UW. This will be the sixth meeting between the two schools. Drake holds a 4-1 advantage in the series history. The last time the two met was March 8, 2015 with the Bulldogs coming out on top with a 5-2 win over Wyoming. Drake is coached by interim coach John Hollimon.
Northern Colorado is 2-0 on the young season and will play Colorado and Drake before taking on the Cowgirls. This will be the 15th meeting between the two teams. Wyoming holds a 14-1 lead in the series. The last time the two met was January 25, 2015 as the Cowgirls defeated the Bears, 5-2. UNC is coached by Brenda Vlasak Gallegos who is in her 12th season with the program.
