LARAMIE, Wyo. -
For the first time in her career, Wyoming Cowgirl tennis player Sarah Summerfield earned MWC Player of the Week honors as announced Wednesday by the league. She and Katariina Tuohimaa, a junior from TCU, both shared the award for the week.
A senior from Chester, N.J., Summerfield posted a perfect 3-0 singles record as the Cowgirls defeated Arkansas-Little Rock (6-1) and Creighton (6-1), before falling to No. 56 Nebraska (5-2). She defeated all three opponents in straight sets, overcoming Arkansas-Little Rock's Ann Weijenborg (6-2, 6-3) and Creighton's Tess Reddin (6-3, 6-1) from the No. 1 slot, and conquering Nebraska's Wiveca Swarting (6-4, 6-2) from the No. 2 position.
In doubles action, Summerfield and partner Sasa Nemcova went 2-1 overall, playing together at the No. 2 and 3 positions. The duo fell to Arkansas-Little Rock's Veronique Luksich/Rebecca van den Houte (8-5), before recording wins over Creighton's Kelsey Schmidt/Anna Kirschenbaum (8-6) and Nebraska's Abby Buxton/Mary Weatherholt (9-7).
Summerfield is currently 12-4 overall in singles and 8-5 in doubles play. During her career as a Cowgirl, she has tallied 57 career singles wins, which is tied for third all-time in school history.
The Cowgirls are currently 2-1 overall and will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 20. They will host the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos beginning at 9 a.m. at the UW Tennis Courts.
