The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team will host one of their five regular season matches of the spring this weekend. They welcome the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, on Saturday, Feb. 20, beginning at 9 a.m. The match will be played at the UW Tennis Courts and admission is free.
"We are excited to play in front of the home crowd," said UW head coach Kati Gyulai. "We've had quality practices and made some adjustments since our last match. We are ready to compete."
The Cowgirls enter this week's competition with an overall record of 2-1. They earned victories over Arkansas Little Rock and Creighton before falling to 56th ranked Nebraska in their opening weekend. Wyoming is currently led by senior Sarah Summerfield who comes in with a 12-4 record overall in singles play and an 8-5 mark in doubles. Junior Kim van Ginkel follows with a 13-5 record on the year, while freshman Alexandra Kovacs has posted a 10-8 mark in singles play.
The Gauchos are currently 2-5 on the season and will play Denver before taking on the Cowgirls. This will be the first ever meeting between the two schools. Bryanna Ojeda leads the way for UCSB with a 10-2 singles record followed by Annabelle Gleddon with a 9-6 mark. They are coached by Pete Kirkwood who is in his 14th season as head coach.
