The nationally ranked Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team will continue their season this weekend by playing two matches at home. They will host the Denver Pioneers on Friday, March 2, and the Wichita State Shockers, on Saturday, March 3. Friday's match is set for 2:00 p.m. while the match on Saturday will begin at 11:00 a.m. Both will be played at the UW Tennis Complex.
The team plus two individuals also continue to hold a ranking in the Campbell's/ITA National Rankings as the most recent rankings came out on Tuesday, February 28.
Wyoming as a team received a national ranking of 62nd among 323 schools that participate in Division I women's tennis. They moved up ten spots from a week ago. It's the highest ranking ever by a Cowgirl tennis team. Earlier this season, the team spent a week in the 63rd position. The UW doubles team of Simona Synkova and Veronica Popovici are currently 60th overall after entering the spring season as the 44th ranked doubles team in the country. They have a current record of 12-5 overall and 3-4 in dual play.
"The national ranking is great but just one step towards achieving our goals of getting to the NCAA tournament," said interim head coach Dean Clower. "The team has come together and we have no plans of stopping now. We look forward to pushing forward again this weekend against two very good teams in Denver and Wichita State."
The Cowgirls currently hold a 5-4 season record, while playing five nationally ranked teams over a month long stretch. They are led by sophomore Veronica Popovici with an overall record of 14-6 overall and a 4-4 dual mark at the number one singles position. Simona Synkova and Sasa Nemcova both have a 12-9 overall record, while freshman Jessica Parizher is 12-10 overall and 6-2 during dual play. Popovici and Synkova are 3-4 in doubles action this spring. Parizher and Silviya Zhelyazkova are 3-3 in dual action along with Alexandra Kovacs and Sasa Nemcova with a 2-2 record.
The Pioneers are currently 8-3 overall. This will be the 11th meeting between the two schools. Denver leads the series 8-2. The last time the two teams met was March 26, 2010 as DU defeated the Cowgirls 4-3 in Denver. The Pioneers are coached by Jeremy Wurtzman who is in his third season.
Wichita State enters the weekend 6-4 overall. This will be the sixth meeting between the two schools with WSU holding a 4-1 edge. The last time the two met was February 26, 2011 as the Shockers defeated the Cowgirls 5-2. Wichita State is coached by Colin Foster who is in his third season.
