LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Wyoming Cowgirl tennis player Alexandra Kovacs was selected as the Mountain West Conference's Player of the Week on Wednesday after posting a 6-0 record last week. Kovacs is the second Cowgirl tennis player to be honored this spring, following Sarah Summerfield's award on Feb. 10.
Kovacs, a redshirt freshman from Esztergom, Hungary, went 6-0 last week to help Wyoming notch a 2-1 record on its road trip against Loyola Marymount (W, 7-0), Cal State Northridge (L, 3-4) and Cal State Fullerton (W, 7-0).
On Thursday against the Lions, Kovacs defeated Estelle LaPorte (6-1, 6-2) at No. 2 singles and teamed with junior Rebecca Berger to down Jane Pringle/Elisaveta Pironkova (8-4) at No. 2 doubles.
Kovacs remained perfect on Friday, netting a No. 2 singles victory over Nina Jawarowski (6-0, 6-3) and a doubles win with Berger over Jawarowski/Whitney Paluch (8-4).
Kovacs capped off her undefeated weekend by moving to the No. 1 singles and doubles positions against the Titans on Sunday. At the top of the singles lineup, Kovacs notched a straight-sets victory over Tiffany Mai (6-2, 6-3). In doubles, she teamed with Berger to down Mai/Monica Rodriguez (8-3).
On the year, Kovacs is now 17-9 in singles matches and 13-3 in doubles action.
The Cowgirls return to action on Sunday, March 28 as they will travel to Denver to take on the DU Pioneers. That match will begin at 10 a.m. (MT).
