Cowgirl Tennis Opens Up MW Play on the Road

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team will kick-off Mountain West play on the road this weekend. They will play the Air Force Falcons, on Friday, April 4, and the New Mexico Lobos, on Sunday, April 6. The match on Friday is set for 2:00 p.m. in Colorado Springs, while the Sunday match is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. in Albuquerque.

The Cowgirls 6-6 overall record on the season and are coming off a 4-0 win against Tulane on Saturday. They are led by senior Veronica Popovici with an overall record of 15-9 this season. Junior Silviya Zhelyazkova currently sits at 12-12 overall and 6-5 in dual play this spring followed by freshman Dorottya Jonas with a 13-14 mark and Christa Gecheva with a 13-13 record.

The Falcons are 14-6 overall and 1-1 in MW play on the season heading into the match. This will be the 25th meeting between the two schools. UW leads the series 16-6. The last time the two teams met was March 16, 2013 as the Cowgirls defeated Air Force, 6-1, in Laramie. They are coached by Kim Gidley who is in her 16th season with the program.

The Lobos are 12-7 overall and 1-1 in MW play this season. They return two letterwinners and welcome eight newcomers from a team that went 7-15 overall and 1-7 in MW play a year ago. This will be the 19th meeting between the two schools. New Mexico leads the series 14-4. The last time the two teams met was April 14, 2013 with the Cowgirls coming out on top 7-0. The Lobos are coached by Erica Jasper who is in her second season with the program.
