The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team will play their final home matches of the 2014 spring season this weekend. UW will host the Boise State Broncos, on Friday, April 11, and the Utah State Aggies, on Sunday, April 13. The match on Friday is set for 1:00 p.m., while the Sunday match is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at the UW indoor tennis courts. Senior Veronica Popovici will be recognized prior to the Utah State match.
"We are excited to get back and play in front of our home crowd," said head coach Dean Clower. "Boise State is a well-coached team, so we will need to be disciplined and aggressive tomorrow. The players have progressing rapidly and I think they are ready for the upcoming stretch."
The Cowgirls are 7-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while coming a 5-2 loss against New Mexico on Sunday. They are led by Popovici with an overall record of 17-9 this season and 2-0 in league action. Junior Christa Gecheva currently sits at 14-14 overall and 7-7 in dual play this spring followed by Silviya Zhelyazkova with a 13-13 mark and Dorottya Jonas with a 14-15 record.
The Broncos are 12-8 overall and 3-2 in MW play this season. Last time out, they defeated Portland State, 7-0, in Boise. This will be the fifth meeting between the two schools. Boise State leads the series 3-1. The last time the two teams met was April 13, 2013 as the Broncos defeated the Cowgirls, 4-3. They are coached by Beck Roghaar who is in his fourth season with the program.
Utah State enters the week 12-8 overall and 0-4 in MW play. They will face Colorado State on Friday before taking on the Cowgirls. This will be the third meeting between the two schools. UW leads the series 2-0. The last time the two teams met was March 26, 2009 as the Cowgirls defeated the Aggies 4-3 in Logan. Utah State is coached by Sean McInerney who is in his first season with the program.
