For the first time in her career, Wyoming tennis player Silviya Zhelyazkova has been selected the Mountain West Player of the Week honors for the matches played from April 8-14. It's the second such honor for the Cowgirls this season and the first time since 2010 that multiple individuals have won the award in the same year.
Zhelyazkova, a senior from Plovdiv, Bulgaria went a perfect 4-0 last weekend helping the Cowgirls to victories over 54th ranked New Mexico Lobos (4-3) and Air Force Falcons (6-1). She defeated Sharon Coone of UNM, 7-5, 6-4, and followed that up with a straight set win, 6-2, 6-2 over Jocelle Rudico. She and doubles partner Dorottya Jonas went 2-0 with wins over the Lobo duo of Bhat and Coone along with a 6-3 win against Chloe Forlini and Rudico of Air Force.
She currently has an overall record of 18-13 in singles play and has won six out of her last seven matches. In doubles action, she and Jonas are 13-4 this spring and 11-1 over the last 12 matches.
The Cowgirls are currently 12-5 overall, 4-0 in MW play and on a seven-match winning streak. Wyoming will close out the regular conference season on Saturday as it hosts the Colorado State Rams.
