Cowgirl Tennis to face San Diego State in MW Championships Opener

The Wyoming women's tennis team will return to action on Friday in the quarterfinal round of the 2015 Mountain West Tennis Championships in Albuquerque. The fifth-seeded Cowgirls will take on the fourth-seeded San Diego State Aztecs. The match is set for 9 a.m. MT at the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium. The Cowgirls enter Friday's contest with a 13-5 record overall, 5-0 in league play and a tie for first in the Mountain West. They are currently on a school record eight-match winning streak. Senior Silviya Zhelyazkova and sophomore Dorottya Jonas pace the way with 19 singles victories on the year. Fellow senior Christa Gecheva follows with an 18-12 overall mark and a 12-3 record during the spring while redshirt freshman Magdalena Stencel enters with a 17-12 overall record and 10-7 in the spring.

In doubles action, seniors Alma Espinosa and Gecheva bring in a 9-4 overall mark and a 3-1 record in league play. Jessica Parizher and Stencel are 8-6 this spring and also sport a 3-1 mark in MW action while Jonas and Zhelyazkova went a perfect 4-0 in conference action and are 14-5.

"The team has worked all year for this and are ready to go," head coach Dean Clower said. "I am truly proud of each one of these young woman for all the hard work and commitment they have given each other and the program over the past few months. We are ready and I can guarantee we will bring it at every line. Whatever happens will happen but you can be sure we will give it our all."

The Aztecs enter this week's contest with a 13-10 mark overall and a 2-2 record in MW play. San Diego State closed out the regular season with two victories against San Diego and UC San Diego. This will be the 17th meeting between the two schools with the Aztecs holding the series record 14-2. It's the first meeting between the schools since April 19, 2013 when SDSU defeated Wyoming 5-1 during the regular season. The two teams have met three times previously in championship action with the Aztecs holding a slight 2-1 edge.
