For second time in three years, the Wyoming women's tennis team will face the Air Force Academy Falcons in the opening round of the Mountain West Conference Tennis Tournament. They will play Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. (CT) in Ft. Worth, Texas. The Cowgirls enter the week as the eighth seed while the Falcons are the ninth seed in the tournament. The winner will take on the top seeded TCU Lady Frogs on Thursday.
The two teams met in the first round of the 2006 MWC tournament, as Wyoming defeated Air Force 4-3.
"The Mountain West is an extremely tough conference with four of our nine teams being ranked," said UW head coach Krissy Hall. "I'm looking forward to playing Air Force in the opening round. We defeated them earlier in the season and I hope that will give us some confidence heading into tomorrow."
The Cowgirls enter this week's competition with an overall record of 10-12 and 1-7 in the MWC. Wyoming is currently led by sophomore Sarah Summerfield who has a singles record of 13-7 overall and 5-3 in conference play, freshman Brittany DeFelice who is 14-2 overall and senior Michelle Brown who is 16-16 in singles play.
Air Force, who comes in as the ninth seed, is currently 6-20 overall and 0-8 in the MWC. They return seven letterwinners to a team that went 10-16 overall a year ago. This is the 15th meeting between the two schools. Wyoming leads the series 8-6. The last time the two teams met was February 1, 2008 as the Cowgirls defeated Air Force, 5-2, in Colorado Springs. Air Force is coached by Kim Gidley who is in her tenth season with the program.
