LARAMIE, Wyo. -
For second time in MWC tournament history, the Wyoming women's tennis team will face the TCU Horned Frogs in the 2007 Mountain West Conference Tennis Tournament, on Thursday, April 27, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Cowgirls enter the week as the seventh seed while the Frogs are the second seed in the tournament. The winner will take on the winner of the UNLV-Utah match. The two teams met last season in the second round of the MWC tournament. TCU defeated the Cowgirls 4-0.
Unfortunately, the Cowgirls will not have the services of freshman Sarah Summerfield who is out with a knee injury. There was some good news to come out of the situation as Summerfield was selected to the All-Mountain West Conference Team on Wednesday. A first year player from Chester, N.J., she finished her year 13-15 in singles play and 13-13 in doubles. After going 7-4 in the fall, Summerfield also made it in to the round of 16 in the main draw of singles play at the Central Regional Tournament.
"We are excited about playing TCU in our first match of the Mountain West Conference Tournament," said head coach Krissy Hall. "We had a tough match against them this spring and are looking forward to this opportunity to play them again."
The Cowgirls enter this week's competition with an overall record of 6-14 and 2-6 in the MWC. Wyoming is currently led by junior Andrea House who has a singles record of 17-15 overall and 2-6 in conference play. Sophomore Jamie Nelson is 10-10 overall and Corina Lazar is 11-17 in singles play.
TCU is currently 13-8 overall, 7-1 in the MWC, while being ranked 36th in regular season competition. They finished in a tie for first in the league with BYU, but earned the second seed due to a tiebreaker. This is the fifth meeting between the two schools. TCU leads the series 4-0. The last time the two teams played was April 15, 2007 when the Frogs defeated the Cowgirls 7-0. They are coached by Jefferson Hammond.
