LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Two members of the Wyoming Cowgirl Tennis Team, Veronica Popovici and Simona Synkova, were recognized on Thursday as the Mountain West announced the 2013 All-Conference Team. The MW awards are selected by the league's nine head coaches.
"This is a well-deserved honor for Veronica and Simona," said head coach Dean Clower. "They both have been solid all conference season. I also think some recognition needs to go out to the other two seniors Alexandra Kovacs and Sasa Nemcova. The three seniors put this program in the national spotlight. I personally like to thank them for all they've done for the University of Wyoming."
Popovici and Synkova were named First Team All-Conference in singles play, while they were selected to the All-Conference Doubles Team as well. It's the first time in school history that a player has won three straight singles awards and the first time that a player has won the doubles award four times.
For Popovici, a native of Piatra Neamt, Romania, it's the third year in a row she has earned the award and the fifth straight year a Cowgirl has been named to the All-Conference team. She is currently 16-13 overall in singles, going 9-10 during the spring. She finished the MW season 3-5 at the number one position.
A native of Brastislava, Slovakia, Synkova garners All-MW singles honors for the second time in her career. She went 14-15 overall and finished with a 4-4 mark at the number two position in the line-up.
Popovici and Synkova have a doubles record of 22-8 overall, while going 12-6 during the spring. They reached the finals of the ITA Mountain Regional Tournament in the fall and were ranked 52nd in the ITA National Rankings to begin the spring season. Playing at the number one position, the duo also finished with a 6-1 mark in MWC action. It's the second such honor for Popovici and the fourth for Synkova.
The Cowgirls, who are seeded sixth, open up the 2013 MW Tournament against the third seeded Fresno State Bulldogs. The match is set for Friday, April 26, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
