Wyoming Tennis Garners Post-Season Honors

April 27, 2011

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Three members of the Wyoming Cowgirl Tennis Team were recognized on Wednesday as the Mountain West Conference announced the 2011 All-Conference Team. The MWC awards are selected by the league's nine head coaches.

Freshman Veronica Popovici was named First Team All-Conference in singles play, while the doubles team of Simona Synkova and Kim van Ginkel were selected to the Doubles All-Conference Team for the second year in a row.

From Piatra Neamt, Romania, Popovici is the fifth player in school history to earn First Team All-MWC honors. It's also the third straight year a Cowgirl has been named to the All-Conference team. She is currently 27-9 overall in singles and 21-7 in doubles play. This spring, she has a 14-6 mark in singles, while finishing the MWC season 5-3 at the number one position.

"This is well deserved award for Veronica," said head coach Kati Gyulai. "She had an excellent freshman year with 27 wins and 9 losses, plus a solid record, 5-3, in the conference."

Synkova (Bratislava, Slovakia) and van Ginkel (Barneveld, Netherlands) have a record of 20-9 overall, while going 14-6 during the spring. Playing at the number one position, they also finished with a 5-3 mark in MWC action. It's the first time in school history that a UW doubles team has earned back-to-back All-Conference honors.

"This is the second year in a row for Simona and Kim to receive this award," she added. "They have done a tremendous job all season. I am pleased to see the recognition."

The Cowgirls, who are seeded sixth, open up the 2011 MWC Tournament against the San Diego State Aztecs, on Thursday, at 10:00 a.m., in Fort Collins.
