Athlete of the Week

Simona Synkova

When did you start playing tennis?
I started playing tennis when I was 5 years old.

What made you decide to play tennis at the college level?
I wanted to study in the United States. I had heard so much about it and I wanted to see it for myself.

How did you get recruited to play for UW?
Coach Gyulai recruited me, she knew my coach from Slovakia.

What is your favorite thing about tennis?
I really enjoy my teammates, they are from all over the world but we get along great! I also like the competition and winning.

Where has been your favorite place to travel and compete?
I loved Hawaii, but New York City wasn't bad either.

What has been your most memorable match?
Beating Utah and after that beating Montana in doubles at the Mountain Regional's to earn a trip to New York City.

What is your hometown in Slovakia like?
Bratislava is an old city with a lot of history. I like the city but I love the people there even more.

What is your favorite thing about Laramie?
I like UW and the people that I have met here.

What are your plans after college?
I am planning to stay in the US. I just changed my major to finance, so I'm not sure what I want to do with that yet.

What is your dream vacation?
I would like to take a cruise to the Caribbean.

If you could play tennis with anyone, who would it be?
I would like to play against Rafael Nadal. He is one of the best players ever, but I think I could beat him.

Who is your biggest role model?
I would like to be like my mentor Chris Gunther. I think he is one of the greatest and smartest people I have ever met.

What is one thing from back home you wished Laramie had?
I wish Laramie had a mall. I love to shop and that would cut down on my driving time.
