LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming tennis team will open up its 2015 fall season this week at the Iberostar College Cup. The competition is scheduled to begin on Thursday morning in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The Cowgirls will face Lamar, Southeastern Louisiana and Texas State over the next several days.
“It feels good to finally get on the courts and start practicing with the returners and newcomers,” UW head coach Dean Clower said. “Honestly, we aren’t necessarily looking at the results but to start developing how to play Cowgirl tennis. We are also looking towards the upperclassmen to take over this team and lead us in the right direction.”
The Cowgirls welcome back three starters and letterwinners to a team that posted a 15-6 record overall and a perfect 5-0 mark in MW action a year ago. The 15 wins marked the sixth-straight year Wyoming has reached double-figure victories and the most victories in the programs history. The first-place finish in MW play was also a school best for a Wyoming tennis team. Four Cowgirls garnered postseason honors including outgoing seniors Alma Espinosa and Christa Gecheva, current junior Dorottya Jonas and sophomore Magdalena Stencel.
Several individuals will be looked upon to help the Cowgirls in 2015-16, including senior Nastya Tokareva, Jonas and Stencel. Tokareva went 15-15 overall and 3-4 in doubles action during the 2014-15 season. Jonas followed up her freshman campaign with a 21-15 singles record and a 19-12 mark in doubles play, while Stencel recorded an 18-14 mark and 13-17 in doubles play during her first season. There are also four newcomers who hope to contribute to the team in Sanne Hoekstra, Elisa Koonik, Miranda Talbert and Tessa van Der Ploeg. The squad is composed of one senior, two juniors, one sophomore and three freshmen.
Wyoming will compete in three more tournaments following this weekend. It will be at the Air Force Invitational, on Sept. 18-20, in Colorado Springs, Colo., the ITA Mountain Regional Tournament, Oct. 14-18, in Las Vegas and the SMU Invite, Nov. 6-8, in Dallas. The spring schedule begins on the road with Tulsa and Oral Roberts. UW’s first conference match will be Friday, April 1 against Air Force. The Cowgirls will host four home matches during the spring.
