Wyoming Tennis Doubles Team Selected In Preseason Rankings

The doubles team of Veronica Popovici and Simona Synkova earned a spot in the Campbell's/ITA preseason doubles rankings which was recently announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The ranking qualifies them to compete in the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, Oct. 4-7, in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

"Veronica and Simona are a good doubles team and will continue improving," said head coach Dean Clower. "These young women have worked very hard to get where they are. We look forward to continuing the progress of the team and will rely heavily on their leadership this year."

Popovici, a junior from Piatra Neamt, Romania, and Synkova, a senior from Bratislava, Slovakia, enter the fall season as the 21st ranked doubles team in the country. Last season, the duo finished the year 47th nationally, while placing first amongst teams in the Mountain Region. The pair stayed among the Top 60 or better in the rankings for all eight weeks last spring.

They finished the 2011-12 year with a record of 21-9 overall and 4-3 in the league, which helped them earn All-Mountain West Conference honors. Their victories all came at the number one position.

For Popovici and the Wyoming tennis program this is the first ever ranking in singles action. She comes into the fall 123rd after finishing her sophomore campaign 20-14 overall and 3-4 in the Mountain West. She earned All-Mountain West honors in singles play for the second year in a row.

The Cowgirls will begin their fall season next Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the BYU Invitational in Provo, Utah.
