The University of Wyoming Women's Tennis Team was one of 92 Division I Institutions to be named on the 2006 ITA All-Academic Team, while four individuals also earned ITA Scholar Athlete honors.
The Cowgirls had an overall grade point average of 3.456 for the 2005-06 Academic Year, and had six members on this year's Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis All-Academic Team.
Michelle Brown, Patricia Chien, Corina Lazar and Amy Senko were among 413 Division I women student-athletes to receive ITA Scholar Athlete awards. Brown, from Quispamsis, NB, Canada, earned a gpa of 3.719 in business administration. A junior this fall, she finished last season with an overall record of 10-12. Chien (Dixon, Calif.) was a four-time letterwinner for the Cowgirls and completed her career with 54 wins. She recently graduated with a degree in family and consumer science and had a gpa of 3.788 last year. Despite a shortened spring season, Corina Lazar completed her year with a 9-9 overall singles mark. A junior from Constanta, Romania, she finished the year with a 3.75 gpa in international studies. One of three seniors on the Cowgirl squad in the fall, Amy Senko (Houston, Texas) achieved a grade point average of 3.867 in speech, language pathology. She finished up the 2005-06 season with an 11-17 singles record and 11-15 in doubles play.
"It's an honor to be recognized by the ITA for our academic achievement," said head coach Krissy Hall. "It shows our commitment to excellence both on and off the court."
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2005 and spring 2006).
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: Be a varsity letter winner, have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).
